As a 1986 Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning graduate, Dodd became a partner of MKM in 1989, and has helped build the firm into a nationally recognized leader in the fields of healthcare and well-being. In 2019, MKM was named one of the "Top 100 Healthcare Architects" by Modern Healthcare Magazine for the thirteenth year in a row.
Dodd has a passion for buildings that improve the urban culture. Because of this, he dedicates time to designing, researching, publishing, and presenting on topics that elevate the expectations of architectural environments.
Dodd currently chairs the Design for Aging Review task force, a biennial collaboration between LeadingAge and the AIA which conducts the national juried design awards and post-occupancy evaluation programs that promote innovative design in environments for older adults. Additionally, Dodd serves on the AIA Design for Aging Knowledge Community advisory group.
Tell us about yourself!
Well, I’ve worked here (George Morrison & Assoc, Morrison Kattman Assoc., Morrison Kattman Menze, MKM) since July 1987. I have been a Principal since January 1989. At that time, we were 4-5 people. I'm a BSU CAP graduate, life-long learner. I’m not good at sitting still and always need to be doing something.
Where did you grow up?
Fort Wayne, Indiana.
What interested you in pursuing a career in architecture?
Not sure. I wanted to be an artist or golf pro until late in high school, which coincided with a fall out with an art teacher. I always enjoyed drafting classes and was lucky to be accepted into the Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning.
What motivates you to come into work every day at MKM?
Writing specifications and responding to emails… No, not really. I do enjoy the family here, enjoy working with our clients and partners, and most of all enjoy the creative side of architecture.
Where do you look for inspiration?
People who are smarter than me.
How do you recharge during your free time?
Lake life, limited travel, cycling, comedians, guitar, and hanging out with the fam.
Which projects are you most proud to have worked on?
That changes year to year. More than projects, it’s the people that we work with.
Where is your favorite place to travel?
I don’t know yet. Italy was a blast. We should have a satellite office in Amsterdam. I need to research this question more.
What is your favorite quote?
Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.
What was the last book your read?
A better question is the last book that I made it ¾ though. I have a tough time reading cover to cover. I read more out of curiosity than enjoyment.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
When it comes to sports and fixing things, I have the confidence and ability to do almost anything, I’m just rarely the best at any of it. Still successful at avoiding Facebook and social media.
