The Pattern Book is a guide for Northeast Indiana as the region seeks to define a new approach to housing for 25,00 new homes.

MKM recently received a Citation Award for New Construction from AIA Indiana Healthcare Design for the planning and design of Josiah White’s Compass Rose Academy. The thoughtful comments from the jury recognized the project’s desire to foster community and belonging during times of personal vulnerability, honoring the natural, rural environment, and creating a “home away from home” that challenges the norms of behavioral health design.
Their remarks affirm our team’s commitment to designing functional spaces, while also nurturing dignity, stability, and connection.
Our research into inclusive placemaking and neuroscience for this project influenced how the arrangement of care cottages and shared spaces shapes a person’s sense of community and personal security. At Compass Rose, the orientation of the residences and “The Hub” encourages interaction while still providing safe, comfortable personal spaces for reflection and respite. The result is a campus that feels both personal and connected.
