MKM architecture + design shares vision for community sustainability

News

MKM architecture + design (MKM) partner, Zachary Benedict, AIA, LEED AP, will discuss common hurdles facing small, rural communities, and offer strategic ideas to consider at the Indiana Library Federation Convention on November 9, 2016, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Benedict’s presentation is entitled “The Tragedy of the Commons: Maker Spaces and Space Making.” As smaller cities and towns attempt to rebound from the recent economic recession, they find community competition has never been more intense – echoing the results of the “tragedy of the commons.” With the undeniable shifts in the demographics profile in the years to come (e.g., age, income, etc.), these communities are desperately looking for strategic ways to remain sustainable. The key to success? According to Benedict, the answer lies within the four walls of our public libraries. This discussion will explore how public libraries serve as “opportunities incubators” for local economies and outline how maker spaces fundamentally rely on space making to succeed.
